Home insurance policy

It's always tempting to go with the first home insurance policy you come across and be done with it. Doing so, however, will probably ensure that your home is not properly covered, not to mention ensure that you're paying too much. Here are a few tips you should keep in mind when buying a home insurance policy.

- Check if your home is in an area prone to flooding. If so, you might want to consider relocating. Flood insurance can be extremely costly and, with many mortgagers, isn't an option when buying insurance. If you're buying a house and don't think you can afford flood insurance, be sure to thoroughly scope out prospective areas and avoid them if you'll be forced to buy flood coverage for your home.

- When calculating the price of your house, be sure to subtract the cost of the land from the total. The land on which the house is built will not be covered by your policy. As such you might end up paying more than you have to for something that's uncovered.

- Once you buy a home insurance policy, check it often. Keep your living situation in mind and make changes to your policy according to changes in the home. If you've recently stopped smoking, for example, let your insurance company know: they will grant you a discount on your premiums as a result.

- Conversely, you may already have way too much coverage. Before signing up for a policy be sure to check what you're paying for, and opt out of protection you don't need. Also keep stock of how much your belongings are worth: as their market value drops, be sure to adjust your policy accordingly.

- Most importantly, don't be satisfied with just one company. In the age of the Internet collecting a wide array of quotes is simple: there are many sites geared towards collecting quotes from multiple companies with one entry. And before you sign up with any company, read over their policy carefully. It may turn out that the great deal they offer is insufficient.
